The harbour is often full of shipping business and animation: and joining it is a large government powder magazine, consisting of five detached bomb-proof and well-protected store-houses, barracks for a company of artillery, a store keeper's mansion, and a good quay.
The magazine was built in , and has room for the safe keeping of 60, barrels of gunpowder. Show essex links for this section. Carfax House: Many of the locals know the story of Dracula and its connection to him. In fact, a house named 'Carfax' to which Count Dracula was supposedly transported in 50 boxes of earth from his Transylvanian Castlewas still standing up to the late 's, in High Road, close to the Thames Board Mills factory site. However, this 'Carfax' house was a red-bricked and tiled building built probably in Decembersome three years after the publication essex May of Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'.
A sales catalogue for describes it as a 'Modern house'. This hardly fits the description of Jonathan Harker, the solicitors clerk arranging the house sale for his client Dracula: "The house is very large and of all periods back, I should say to medieval times". So, are there any other contenders for Dracula's Carfax House?
The only 'large' and 'old' house in the village is in fact 'Purfleet House', built in by Samuel Whitbread of brewing fame, who purchased a large part of Purfleet and lived here essex that time. The house is set in the remains of what appears to be the nearest part to the river, of an exhausted chalk quarry, to the north and rear of the house were gardens with paths and grottoes which appear to be a feature of attractions available to the Victorian tourist in the village.
Access was available by key from the head gardener, possibly for a small donation!. The Chapel: The house was built with a detached Chapel of Ease for the Whitbread family, so Jonathan Harker's description of the house which includes, ".
Stone wall and Landscape Settings: Finally a description is made of the settings around the house; "It contains in all some 20 acres, quite surrounded by solid stone walls Purfleet are many trees on it, which makes it look gloomy, and there is a deep, dark looking lake, evidently fed by some springs, as the water is clear and flows away in a fair sized stream.
Photographs of Edwardian date show heavily wooded areas, within and around the old chalk quarries of 16th century origin. By Victorian times, they had re-seeded essex have mature trees and bushes growing in and around the steep cliff faces of the redundant quarries.
A small section of stone wall survives near to the site of Purfleet House. However, after it was sold in and during its part-demolition, much material was recycled into the current St. Stephen's Church, which now stands in the grounds. Perhaps more of this wall existed originally around the house.
Here also were to be found the pleasant paths leading up to beacon hill and the site of an Admiralty experimental light house station and panoramic views of the Thames valley, to the west London and the east to Gravesend in Kent, which were much used and appreciated by the visitors to Victorian Purfleet. The mention of a 'lake' would also fit into this area. Chalk extraction, which had been undertaken for several hundred years essex the area had probably cut down into the lower levels essex chalk and into a water table, in the same way as the appropriately named modern "Lakeside" Shopping Centre, sited in the bottom of the Tunnel Cement chalk quarry has, with its own lake.
Finally, close by is the Mardyke stream which, having risen in the Bulphan fens, flows finally into the Thames, just to the west of the village, adjacent to the Royal Gunpowder Magazines. Although not connected to chalk, it would have been flowing with clean, fresh water. The Lunatic Asylum House: The final part of the description remarks on other buildings nearby to 'Carfax', " There are few houses close at hand, one being a large house only recently added to and formed into a private lunatic asylum.
It is not essex visible from the grounds. This was set purfleet the high brick security wall purfleet the magazine system, which proved and stored the majority of gunpowder for the Purfleet and Sea Services from onwards.
The purfleet was constructed of brown brick, with double Portland stone used for the cornices and parapets. The entrance door had eaved architraves and above was a quarter foiled fanlight, and the building was completed in As Purfleet House is set in the bottom of a chalk quarry in close proximity to the west and north of a rising cliff face, and Ordnance House is beyond and on top of the chalk hill, behind high brick security walls, they cannot be seen from each other although only some yards separate them.
Seward saw, "a white figure scale the high wall which separates our grounds from those of the deserted house'. In following the escaped lunatic, Dr. Seaward describes how he, " got a ladder myself, and crossing the wall, dropped down on the other side". These could easily describe the solid 10' high brick military boundaries around the gunpowder magazine.
So, there seem to be a number of buildings and landscapes which could relate to the story, but why Purfleet? Did Stoker ever visit the area? Purfleet in Victorian times: Purfleet, I discover, was something of a Victorian leisure attraction.
Easy access by train from Fenchurch Street Station purfleet Purfleet station, opened inallowed Londoners to experience the countryside and riverside pleasures at one resort. Wingrove's Hotel at Purfleet, on the Thames waterfront, offered bathing facilities and amongst a wide range of gastronomic offerings were special whitebait suppers, entertainments and accommodation for overnight stays.
Nearby were scenic walks along paths cut through overgrown purfleet quarries, with cliff faces and ledges leading up to Beacon Hill, essex its panoramic views up and down the river. Here could be found the Admiralty Experimental Light House.
Walking back down into the sleepy village a number of tea rooms offered refreshments to the tourists, some of whom had come down by train to Purfleet Station from Fenchurch St, and others on Cycle Club outings or by ferry. It appears that while Bram Stoker was Acting Manager of the Royal Lyceum Theatre in London, he and his thespian friends would often travel out on Sundays, traditionally a black day for theatres, to visit friends and attractions outside of the capital.
Stoker also extensively used published material of fact and fiction to build up the storylines. The use of train and ferry time-tables in his Dracula novel gives some authenticity to the chronology and accuracy of day-to-day events. So it is quite possible that Purfleet was visited by Stoker, and he could have obtained time-tables from the London Tilbury Southend Railway for travel between Fenchurch Sreet. It is also possible that he obtained tourist guide books of south Essex and even of Purfleet.
Having now toured Purfleet and consulted Ordnance Survey maps, local archives including a s sale catalogue of the Purfleet estate, prints and photographs in Thurrock Museum's collections and biographies on Stoker, I feel there are too many similarities between the book and the buildings, structures and landscape at Purfleet. I suggest that Stoker did visit Purfleet which allowed him to mix elements of fact with fiction.
If only the visitors' book of the Royal Hotel at Purfleet had survived from Victorian days, perhaps my quest would have been easier? Find out more about cookies. How can we purfleet this page easier to use?

Take a peak at the before and after pictures for this huge revamp. The development in Purfleet will completely change the landscape of a small town which only has 12, residents. The town, which is based in Thurrock in south of the county, will grow into Purfleet-on-Thames over the space of 10 to 15 purfpeet after the large regeneration project was approved last week Thursday, April As part of the project, the train purrfleet will be updated and maybe in time moved, and a town centre will be created with shops and transport links all in one place.
So what will Purfleet actually look like in 15 years? We took a trip down to Purfleet to find out what some of the biggest changes will be. It was picked as a prime location with the 'riverside' views, large areas ready for development and the fact that it is just a minute train ride into London. As it stands, the town only has around 12, residents but this will change with the 2, homes given the go-ahead for construction.
At the moment, the train station is a short distance from one of the main entrances into the town, via London Road. It features a level crossing that intersects a standard two-way road, meaning motorists are often met with a sssex delay due trains to and from London on the C2C line.
Purfleet this could all change, lurfleet project bosses want to implement a bridge to allow traffic to pass over without stopping. The essex station will also become part of the 'central hub' of the town, with a new town centre being built right next to it in the unused green space. The town centre will connect to a brand new high street and riverside shopping destination. There are not many shops or retail areas in Purfleet, with popular intu Lakeside Purrfleet Centre within a short driving distance, and the A13 and M25 a stones-throw away.
A new area, the Riverside Esplanade, will make more use of the riverfront and the path along the sea wall. There is currently a essex footpath through Botany Cottages, but it only features a heavily essex river wall. The 'urban waterfront' will have housing developments and a retail space closest to the River Thames. The project claims in the future the desolate area will have temporary retail outlets, pop-up events and permanent food and drink outlets. The High Street will link up to the esplanade, which is a short distance from the train station to the west.
The Market Square will offer market stalls and public transport destinations, including trains, buses and taxis, and therefore is likely to be near the train station. Currently, there is a large river walk from the Purfleet Heritage Purflet at the very west of the town which has open green space, a small children's park and the historical Purfleet sign. The plans will see the river walk transformed into an 'urban waterfront', the 'riverside plaza' and the 'boardwalk esplanade' moving eastwards from the Heritage Centre.
This is a far cry from the overgrown shrubs, graffiti and views of the Dartford Crossing which occupy the space at the moment. It will be owned by Quatermaster Studios which will look to have several sets and studios for all kinds of entertainment projects. The studios will sit in industrial and non-residential areas, between Tank Hill Lane and the Carpertright Corporate Office.
The area mapped out for the studios is huge essex it could be as big as m in length, becoming a large focal point of Purfleet-on-Thames. Councillor Peter Smith, who was the representative for Aveley and Uplands, told Essex Live last year that the studios purrleet a 'natural progression' for the area.
Cllr Smith, who was from the Thurrock Independents party until the recent essed elections, said: "I believe it's natural progression from the Royal Opera House which moved a lot of their stage production facilities to Purfleet.
I have spoken to who is overseeing this part of this stage and there are very exciting plans. PCRL hope to link the studios with colleges and schools, looking into different opportunities available, including on-set training and apprenticeships in the hope of offering employment and creative education in the area.
It opened with the Royal Opera House's Essex Production workshop and houses some of the most valuable costumes from the biggest puefleet performances, including gowns worn by Darcey Esssx. The studios will sit near the town centre and railway station and will be found just over the tracks. We spoke to the team at Royal Opera House in Essex, find out what it was like working with the most expensive costumes here.
The plans include a secondary school and even a 'mini university campus' in purfleet future. The school is planned to purfleet built opposite Beacon Hill Drive, although this could change subject to planning permission. It will be run by the Harris Federation as a free school, supported by Thurrock Council, and it already opened in Septemberon a temporary site at a primary purfleet along Mayflower Road.
The Harris Federation currently has several schools in Essexincluding primary and secondary academies in Chafford Hundred, Grays, Rainham and Riverside.
The masterplan also includes a new primary school near to the residential development between Tank Hill Lane and the 'studios'. A lot of the houses are planned to be built on the industrial areas next to the river and behind the train station south of the town, and north of the train tracks, between the Carpetright office and Tank Hill Lane.
The plan features houses and apartments with mixed-tenure agreements, for residents with different incomes and buying opportunities. PCRL want to encourage people to live and work locally and focus on making the purfleet 'pedestrian-friendly'. The project has been designed to create a street network to foster a walking and cycling environment.
There will only be spaces for one car per dwelling, which essex affect residents with more than esex vehicle. Cllr Smith said in May last year : "Picture this as an entire new village, the building will be modern and very close to the station. The streets within Purfleet Town Centre will have eszex speed limit of 20mph to enable safe cycling along these routes. This will likely be implemented once construction is finished essex near completion, but further details will be released closer to the time.
The PCRL also want to build a new flood defence wall out of concrete with an aim to raise the maximum height to 8. Jackie Doyle-Price, Conservative MP for Thurrockspoke of her concerns of the planning application before it was approved. On April 18, a week before the committee met to decide on the plans, she released a statement regarding purfleet proposals.
The fssex to the Channel Tunnel Rail link generates noise which makes filming impossible. This is well known to the developers. It is therefore of genuine surprise to me that the proposals remain part of this planning application.
The proximity to the A13 and the M25 makes the location attractive and as they are tucked away barely anyone knows that they are. This is clearly undesirable. The suggestion that the development will bring jobs is highly questionable to say the least.
This just does not stack up. Consequently, the proposals were objected to by the Environment Agency, the Port of London authority and the Mayor of London.
However, she did speak of the need of new homes in the town, and hoped the planning committee reflected on her points before coming to a decision. Ms Doyle-Price added: "I really do want to see the construction of new homes in Purfleet. We desperately need them. And I want to see investment in to make Purfleet a pleasant place to live and visit. It is a brilliant riverside location with good transport links.
Essex should not really be this difficult. I have said before that Thurrock officers are showing cultural prejudice towards creative industries and embedded snobbery towards the logistics sector. Those businesses at Botany way have been blighted for ten years.
The local people who work in the businesses at Botany way deserve far better than this. If you live or work in Thurrock, you can keep on top essex all the news from the area in this Facebook group. The council have also added the project will now provide 2, jobs throughout the development - although it is believed it initially stated 2, purfleet and that the proposals purfleet see changes to 'mostly brownfield sites' in Purfleet.
An integrated medical centre will also be constructed, as part of the health scheme across Thurrock, following the decision to close Orsett Hospital.
